Cosmic Attraction

Monoprint Artwork
Just like how Funk meets Jazz, Gnarles Bobby is a composition that fuses the upbeat with the downbeat of this colorful combination. This cosmic expression can bring both excitement and chill that can have someone wanting more of this articulation of impulse and pause. Notice the striking and audacious blocks of strokes used throughout this piece as it is consumed with vibrancy and relaxation. Just as opposites can become attracted to one another, allow the attraction of the funky hues in Gnarles Bobby to bring forth that expression your inner expression of “funk-atitude”.

The Dirty Brand

ver the course of my career, I have been fortunate to work on some great brands.  Such as Harlem Lyrics, Geoff Duran, and most recently Cocoa Belle Chocolates. By far, my favorite brand I’ve created was The Dirty Magazine.

Now, I know what you are thinking, a dirty magazine?. It’s not what your think. The Dirty was a magazine focused on southern hip-hop music. Anybody who is a fan of the music knows that the nickname for the southern hip-hop culture is “The Dirty South”. Hence, the name The Dirty... the speaker box of southern hip-hop music.

The Dirty was an exciting brand experience. It wasn’t because of the logo. Which, I think is great. It wasn’t just because of the wonderful media guide. And it wasn’t because of the outstanding content description. It was the combination of all those things to tell a great compelling story.

Let me tell you the moment that made this best brand experience for me. I, along with my editorial staff, decided that David Banner would be the best rapper for the premier issue cover. We thought that David truly personified what it means to be a southern rapper.  We were fortunate to connect with his publicist at the time.

Our challenge was we had no money, and no one knew who we were. We hadn’t published anything. Not even a snippet of the magazine.

What we did have was a dynamic media guide piece. The content highlighted the magazine's point of view about southern hip-hop culture. Also, we had a wonderful design concept which showcased the cutting edge dirty attitude of the publication. It was all about “The Dirty South”.

So, we quickly mailed David’s publicist our media guide on a Tuesday. She called us on Thursday.  At that very moment, I realized how branding is powerful!  All we had was the media guide. So, the media guide was instrumental. It established a great brand experience. Which, ultimately, fostered a quick response that resulted in an interview with David the very next week.

Inspiration from a blank existence

This artwork is part of the Mosaic Templar Cultural Center permanent collection
1. Little Boy Solomon  2. Little Girl Sarah

As a student studying American history, the only thing I remember about black people during the civil war was steeped in agony. The history told about black people during this time has been regulated to tragedy, and property.  Their personality has been stripped from history.  Who really were these people?

Like so many African-Americans, there are only a few things we can refer back to that gives us a glimpse into the life of our early African-American ancestors. In my case, all I have are two names. They are my great grand parents Solomon and Sarah.

Everything else I know about our early African-American ancestors is found in the economic, social and political structure of the time. What it must have felt like to live in a culture that only valued you by how much cotton you can pick.  I can’t image living in a blank existence.  That your life you have is no worth recording.

“Little Boy Solomon” and “Little Girl Sarah”, which are now on display at the Mosaic Templar Cultural Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, are my interpretation of African American slave life.  Surviving through a blank existence that supported a culture of greed, ignorance and oppression is something I can’t image.

But even in this agony, there is inspiration. African Americans who live in America are the results of great endurance, patience and strength.  Our ancestors survived a tragic life in order for us to tell there great story.  That story is found in the blood of our souls.  I pray that God allows me the time, strength and courage to tell that beautiful story.

Shepherd

As a kid playing the piano and organ for several churches, I loved how music shepherded in peace and harmony.  The beautiful tones of harmonic melody led a wonderful spirit of quite truth to a valley of hopeful souls.  A breathe taking event.

Expressing My Thelonious Freedom

As a young man growing up in Dumas Arkansas, I was blessed to be the musician for the senior choir at St. Peter’s Rock Missionary Baptist.  My fondest memories are the Sunday afternoon choir rehearsals.  Watching and learning from a group of seasoned singers who found so much joy in singing the notes before the piano played a tone ignited a freedom in my soul that I cling to everyday.  This is my “Thelonious Freedom”.

Much like the music of Thelonious Monk, “Thelonious Freedom” expresses a sophisticated measure.  Each note plays a tone of beautiful rich texture that frees the soul from the bondage of un-inspired mood.  When I’m in that bondage, I look for my beautiful measure of freedom…my Thelonious Freedom.

Listen to the Beat

I can only hope that the legacy of your family is found in the beat of your soul.  You should be striving to learn everything that is relevant to whom you are.  Looking and listening for those sweet songs that provide a measure of hope in your life.  Your groove should dance to the beat of your own drum.

I hope when you read this poem, you will take the time to listen for the beat of your drum.

The Beat of the Drum
By: George Frederick Nash

The raw texture of leather tones
Moves smoothly through the open plane
Making strong distinctive marks
Teaching the lovers’ game

A bottom note followed by a high cry
Catches the eye of the bold groove
Sending the message
It’s time to move

The relevant rhythm of flavored bars
Walks with the emancipated joints of the silky rhyme
Serving the world a hot dish
Filled with all the right ingredients of the time

That music is heard so far and deep
It causes the body to dance in a unique form
Moving their feet, clapping their hands, and shaking their hips
Are emotions that the soul has transformed

Beats played so loud and clear
That the world has to set up and take note
Listening to a sweet song
That provides a measure of hope

It's Her

It's Her
By George Frederick Nash

I thought I would never meet someone
Who would take my breath away,
Claiming my spirit
And blessing me in every possible way.

A strong soul
So beautiful and pure,
A bright light that brings this world
So much joyous cheer.

I hope to find her
And become part of her best,
Realizing that she is
Bone of my bone
And flesh of my flesh.

Just like Jacob,
I am committed to complete the garden,
Showing how much I value
The most precious thing to her father.

A lovely Queen
Regal as the monarchs of the Nile,
A wonderful spirit that
Loves the people
Like a mother loves her child.

My soul is happy
And it is doing a celebration dance,
Because I have seen her
And recognize that I must not miss this chance.

First I worship
And bless God for being true,
Then I pray
And ask Him to see me through.

Asking for guidance
To connect with such a gentle flower,
Keeping my heart open
To stay near her.

Knowing that I cannot be scared
To show her who I am,
I leap.
Looking for a place to land
In her heart
In her soul
Hoping she would open the door
And let me in her fold.

Alien Color Man

Alien Color Man
By George Frederick

The ship has landed to deliver its cargo.
Packages with great economic value
That generate new power and money in an infant land.
This strange cargo, with no voice
Is picked over like a farmer picks his land.
Examining their dark rich color.
Feeling their powerful firm muscles.
All the while not knowing that this alien package
Is taking in all that it can view.
Plotting the escape from a land
It never wanted to see.

The Soul Symphony Joint

The Soul Symphony Joint
By: George Frederick Nash

The orchestration of souls
Working together to play
Velvet smooth tones
That are placed in their hearts
By the fresh hand of God.

A simple groove
With a unique key signature
Riding the suede beat
Of the rhythm prince.

The luxurious rhyme
Of the soulful psalmist
Connects the heart
To a beautiful experience.

A fabulous sound
That breathes life
Into a normal existence.

This symphony
Of vivid tones and smooth textures
Heats the soul
To burn down the joint.

Beautiful Chocolate

Beautiful Chocolate
By: George Frederick Nash

The sweet aroma of blended ingredients
Dancing together to smell so fresh
It's essence touches the soul
Sparks the thought that this is so blessed

The velvet smooth pallet of distinctive textures
Joyfully tickles the voice of your heart
A luxurious silky taste of elegant flavor
Entices the spirit to take part

The dark milky sensation of lavish treats
Fills the room with a cheerful mood
The brightness of its gorgeous attitude
Turns on the passion of your own groove

The grand composition of noble treasures
Dazzles the eye with its spectacular shell
Providing a moment that caters to your gentle emotion
Causing you to pick a beautiful chocolate belle

Macaroni And Cheese

Macaroni And Cheese
By: George Frederick Nash

I stand at the edge of the field
Taking in the smell of the summer breeze.
In the distance my mother yells from the porch
"It's lunch time. I made your favorite... macaroni and cheese."

I take off and run fast as I can.
Running so hard
As much as my little feet can stand.

I make it to the porch
And jump to the top step.
Embracing the sweet aroma
Of love that is so heart felt.

I run to the table to
Take my seat.
My mother says,
"Stop running or you won't get your favorite treat."

I stop running and walk fast.
I make it to the table and ask for a big glass.

She says,
"What would you like to drink my impatient little son?"
I reply,
"Red kool-aid! That sounds like fun."

With a smile, I begin to feed my face.
Stuffing my little belly, as much as it can take.

As my mom walks toward the table,
I think to myself
I am so pleased.
Not because she is wonderful and beautiful.
But because she made me macaroni and cheese.

Motherland’s Liberty

Motherland’s Liberty
By George Frederick Nash

Crimson soil
Cultivating life
Motherland’s glory
Shining bright.

Ebony wood
Growing legacy
Motherland’s heart
Living beautifully.

Golden sun
Giving liberty
Motherland’s spirit
Singing victory.
